Memories of Taliesin West

I was saddened to learn that Frank Lloyd Wright’s School of Architecture at Taliesin and Taliesin West will close. Established in 1932, Taliesin has been home to over 1,200 architects who furthered the practice of “Organic Architecture.”

I would make many walks from my home in Ancala (which I built in 1997), up the road to Taliesin West, occasionally bringing my camera along.  Attending events and taking tours enhanced my appreciation of how Wright and the school impacted architecture in many ways.

These photos are from my last walk to Taliesin West in April 2018, taken a few weeks before moving back to California.

While I’m not an architect, but rather an avid enthusiast, I have great hopes that Frank Lloyd Wright’s vision for educating new architects will continue.  Perhaps Arizona State University is a good place to continue that legacy.

Long Beach: Peninsula Beach

alamitos_bay

Long Beach’s ocean-front Peninsula Beach at low tide.

Long before the first homes were built on the peninsula as early as 1902, a private duck hunting club was located at 62nd Place.

The historic pedestrian Seaside Walk Boardwalk, made of wood and built in the 1920s, is maintained by the city, and remains popular among locals seeking relaxation walks and beautiful sunsets.

From it’s early days as a duck hunting club, many well-known celebrities, creatives and everyday people find inspiration and refuge away from the hectic demands of big-city life.

Ray Kappe, AIA – Naples Island Remodel

I wish I knew more about this Mid-Century Modern, set along the seaside canals of Naples Island in Long Beach, California. Built in the 1940s, the home was remodeled in 1956 by renowned Long Beach architect Ray Kappe.

I’ve always paused and admired it since I was a kid growing up in the neighborhood back in the 60s/70s.

Modernist George Montierth, AIA

Another personal waterfront favorite along the canals of Naples Island in Long Beach, California is this 1948 George Montierth-designed mid-century modernist.

Surprisingly, not much is published about the locally prolific Long Beach, California architect, who not only designed a number of timeless buildings from his offices in the Ocean Center Building in downtown Long Beach in the 1940s and 50s, but also mentored several young architects who went on to higher fame.
